Hi Richard,

I'm not sure what the exact cause was of the chillers going down. That was several years ago and my memory fails me. I vaguely remember somebody saying a pump had burned out. Don't know if it was caused by low voltage though. Fortunately for the bank it was on the "test boxes" so none of our customers were affected BUT it made it awfully hard for us programmers to meet some deadlines.

The last time I toured the compute utility I was shown this huge room full of what looked like a sea of car batteries wired in parallel (or is it serial? I'm a software engineer not a hardware engineer) which we were told was used to smooth out any low voltage dropouts. The high voltage spikes were handled by some other room full of gadgetry. Although I guess if we don't get water from the local water company it doesn't matter what kind of power we have.

In fact this little problem just bit us again last week with our web servers. Apparently there's a roomful of web type servers located in the room a short distance from me. Some maintenance guys shut off the water to our floor because they're remodeling the men's room. Now why our servers would be on the same water line as the bathroom is beyond me but they are and that brought everything to a screeching halt back there. Let's hope that the mainframe compute utility was a bit more intelligently designed than my office...

Bill

PS

Do you happen to have a link to some plans on how to build a generator from a lawnmower engine. Can't remember if it was you or Ole49r who mentioned that.
