Leading Internet Service Provider Selects FORE Systems for Network Upgrades; UUNET Selects ForeRunner ASX-4000

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading supplier for building out the new public network, today announced that UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company and a global leader in Internet communications solutions, will deploy FORE's award-winning ForeRunner® ASX(TM)-4000 switch.

''FORE Systems is committed to providing the industry-leading solution for network infrastructure upgrades,'' said Thomas J. Gill, president and CEO of FORE Systems. ''UUNET's decision to upgrade its network with the ASX-4000 demonstrates FORE's ability to deliver upon this commitment.''

This announcement represents a significant expansion of UUNET's existing relationship with FORE Systems. UUNET selected FORE's ForeRunner ASX-1000, and ASX-200BX switches for the initial build out of its switched Internet network solution. The ASX-4000 deployment will complement the existing ASX-1000 switches, which migrate to the edge of the network. All ASX switches run the common ForeThought® software, which has the proven robustness, scalability and capacity management features for even the largest networks.

Why FORE Systems?

After extensive testing, UUNET decided to include FORE's ASX-4000 as part of its network because of the switch's capacity, resiliency and scalability. Additionally, ForeThought's Capacity Aware Routing(TM) and Dynamic Protection Switching(TM) provide a stable routing solution with advanced traffic engineering and transparent failure recovery. These features enable more efficient use of bandwidth and improve UUNET's ability to meet service level agreements (SLAs). FORE's commitment to IP, multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), and packet over SONET (POS) and high capacity switches and switching rates assures UUNET of a strong migration capability as Internet bandwidth demands continue to increase.
