Apple Computer's new iMac personal computer is Japan's best-selling PC, and the majority of buyers are first-time Apple customers, said interim chief executive Steve Jobs.
In his keynote address at MacWorld Expo Tokyo 1999, the Apple cofounder said the No. 7 computer maker shipped 800,000 iMacs between August 15 and December 31, making it the best-selling PC in both Japan and the U.S. during that period.
Among Japanese buyers of the Internet-ready iMac, which features a translucent plastic case in five colors, 46 percent were first time computer users, and 16 percent were former owners of non-Apple PCs. The industry average is about 20 percent.
"We could not be happier with these statistics in Japan. This is incredible not only for Apple but also for developers," Jobs said.
Jobs shared the stage with a blueberry-colored iMac during the presentation. That and other Apple products will be available to Japanese consumers over the Internet at Apple's online store beginning today, he said.
Stores in Akihabara, Tokyo's main computer retailing district, haven't been able to keep iMacs in stock, with new shipments selling out in a matter of minutes. "We cannot make them fast enough," Jobs said |
