Shares buy back is not a scam. Many good companies are doing it simply because they think the best investment for their cash is their own stock. Look at IBM and MO (the latter is besieged by tobacco suits).

Dell does not pay dividend since MCD believes that the extra cash is better used to buy back shares which rewards shareholders better. Dell is a growth company and as such the cash flow is use for: growth of the company and buy backs. Without buy backs recently, the 2:1 split would just be very tight considering the number of authorized shares.

Are you favoring dividend paying companies? Go to utilities, and you won't have that high swings. You already know the double taxation on dividends. That's why I like Dell with virtual dividend.
