I wouldn't worry about that...
I have a feeling AAPL is better suited for competition in that market than we may realize. I think that certain recent events in the industry (DOJ, LINUX, etc.) are shifting focus and attention away from the pure price decision. Decisions were tough when it was one that had to be made between $1,500-3,500. Now that the range is down to $500-1,200 the amount of money consumers are thinking of spending is essentially chump change.
The drive to have the cheapest computer, now, will not be a company saving move. At these price levels, differentiation and branding become more important.
