Ken... As a bear who tries to use logic, I'll ask you this question. If the removable market hasn't much potential for profit and is not worth entering why are so many big boys trying to enter it: IBM, SONY, Compaq ( Superdisk consortium ) etc...

They must see potential in the future. The 1.44 is dead, you want to send me that little data email it to me. When bandwith gets bigger and faster all media will be distributed over the Web, you can already buy it that way. If its 5 or 10mb thats the way I'll purchase it. And you have the music industry getting behind a standard for watermarking data to a disk so it can't be copied. The article I read on it said it'll only be viable when the bandwith increases to the masses. But as far as music singles being purchased bandwith wouldn't be a problem. As far as whole CD's downloaded to a disk that wouldn't be a problem to me either, I'd just set it up to be done while I sleep. So software distribution on any media will soon be a moot point. But if I want to exchange data or even trade music with a friend you'll need removable storage even more so when large amount of data can be acquired quickly and easily.

Sorry to be so long winded, just want to hear the Logical bear side of these issues. BTW... I'm seeing more Compaq's with Superdisks. The Superdisk saw a window of opportunity open back up after they thought it shut thanks to that fine HiFD design. Since the head of Sonys' removable drive division went to IOM long before that flop shipped you can bet they knew it would before anyone but Sony. I for one stated on several occasions I want the HiFud to ship, let those 2 dogs fight over they're little bone.

P.S. Don't be fooled, if any backward compatible drive becomes standard, the first thing they'll do and as soon as they can would be to remove the backward compatible function lower the price a little and increase their margins, and the general public will have what they already have a drive that only reads one type of media.
