Encouraging Developments In Congo Talks

February 18, 1999
By Farouk Chothia

Cape Town - There were "very encouraging" developments in efforts to end the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, President Nelson Mandela said yesterday. Mandela was speaking after meeting Zambian President Frederick Chiluba in Cape Town.

Chiluba is mediating in efforts to end the war. Mandela said Deputy President Thabo Mbeki would travel to Lusaka soon to discuss in detail the "monumental achievements" in efforts to bring about peace.

Asked whether a cease-fire agreement was within reach, Mandela said "satisfactory progress" had been made. Since December, four attempts to bring a cease-fire into effect have failed.

Delegates to the meeting discussed claims that Chiluba was supplying weapons to Unita rebels in Angola. Chiluba denied the allegations and Mandela said he would relay this to Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
