Ohh, really? IBM and AT&T were once monopolies just like MSFT is now. And what standard are you talking about? Any standards I've seen so far, MSFT is not the sole participant on the committee. Are you talking about Java? or any standard in consumer electronic commerce? You've lost me there. It seems like SUN is doing pretty well in those area. RDBMS standard? seems like Oracle is the leader. If you are talking about open system standard or programming language standard, then there are more than one player. You've lost me there.

Byron, You can't look at IBM and AT&T and determine how MSFT will do. MSFT has the unique position of setting the standards in a lot of products while IBM could not. Back in IBM's days, PCs were not as common. It is more difficult to drop MSFT from its position.
