Sorry, but I beg to differ with you.

Freeware is just that, it's free to use. It contains an author's copyright, it is not in the public domain. It's the author's program but anyone can use it for free. It also can never be charged for legally by a third party.

Shareware is also copyrighted, but not free to use for an unlimited time. A registration fee is expected, and legally required, if the program is used beyond the terms and conditions of the shareware license granted.

If shareware only works with Boy Scouts and old ladies, then I must have bumped into hundreds of Boy Scouts and old ladies with my EZ-PnF shareware program. There are many honorable people out there who try and then pay to register a quality shareware product.
