<< I think the release was vague in some areas >>

You're not kidding. I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of this:

<< " ... the return of Targretin rights will now permit us to rapidly generate revenues from distribution agreements pending in territories in which we will not directly market Targretin in oncology and dermatology,' said Ligand Chairman, President and CEO David E. Robinson." >>

How can they "rapidly" generate revenues from a product "not" approved yet by the FDA, and in territories in which they won't be directly marketing Targretin in oncology and dermatology? Unless these distribution agreements cover sales of ONTAK or Panretin Gel, in areas in which they were restricted due to Targretin agreements now returned to Ligand by Lilly??????

It sure sounds good until you try to understand it. The problem is: my question sounds more confusing than Robinson's statement. <g>

This sounds even better:

"Important Phase II trials in breast cancer and psoriasis, begun in 1998, are expected to be completed in 1999. We will miss the milestone revenue from the first generation compounds; however, 'We expect these opportunities plus potential milestone revenue from the second generation compounds will contribute to our march to profitability this year and next,' he continued."

So, Robinson is still predicting profitability for 1999 and 2000.

Today's stock action, plus the confusing news release reminds me of the old joke: "the surgery was a success, but the patient (LGND) died"
