Bruce,

Thanks for that synopsis of the show. I would imagine that it would be difficult to discuss PLFM in detail within the short amount of time Howard was given.

Just found this on the CBC (Can Broadcast Corp) Newsworld site:

NASA refuses to launch Canadian satellite WebPosted Thu Feb 18 22:45:35 1999

TORONTO - NASA is refusing to launch a new high-tech Canadian radar satellite because it says American intelligence agencies feel it causes a threat to U.S. national security.

The Radarsat-2 satellite has an advanced radar scanner that can pierce clouds and the dark of night. The scanner can help forecast crop yields, direct mineral exploration and keep an eye on arctic ice for shipping.

The new satellite can reveal objects as small as three metres across. An older generation Radarsat-1 can only reveal objects seven metres across.

This forward leap in technology reportedly unnerves U.S. officials.

"Anything below five metres causes concern to the U.S. intelligence community," said Hugues Gilbert, director of strategic development for the Canadian Space Agency.

"But we think that having the three-metre resolution is really crucial to Canadian industry. It's very important for tapping into new markets."

The market for radar satellites is steadily growing. The Canadian Space Agency says it is ready to have the $305 million satellite launched by another space agency, if necessary.

Hmmmmmmm, it's too bad PLFM isn't quite ready to do launches yet. I'm sure if they were to approach CSA, they'd have a good shot at making the launch.

Cheers, Rory.
