Nortel Networks Completes First Mobile Video Call Using W-CDMA
Mobile Webtone Demo Achieves Data Rates of Up to 384 Kbps Using 3G Technology
PARIS, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced the successful completion of packet-switched, mobile video conference calls and high speed web browsing at transmission rates up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps) using W-CDMA third generation (3G) radio technology. This breakthrough demonstrates the capability of 3G networks to deliver the promise of a full range of high-speed multimedia services.
These high speed packet and video calls follow a number of other successful demonstrations over the past 60 days, including voice calls over the public switched telephone network (PSTN) using 3G terminals, and data calls using PCMCIA equipped laptop computers. All were completed in a Nortel Networks laboratory in France.
''In addition to demonstrating the capability of our W-CDMA technology, these tests showcase Nortel Networks' power to deliver Mobile Webtone solutions,'' said John O'Connell, general manager, GSM Solutions, Nortel Networks. ''We are uniquely positioned to provide the next generation of mobile networks with the combination of our IP/data networking expertise and our track record as a leader in GSM, cdmaOne (IS-95), TDMA IS-136, and now UMTS.''
''Mobile Webtone is all about the delivery of high speed packet data through both existing mobile networks and tomorrow's 3G networks,'' O'Connell said. ''It will enable wireless operators to rapidly move from providing primarily voice services today to literally being able to put the net in the pockets of their subscribers at a radically lower cost.''
These developments follow the recent announcement by Nortel Networks of a 3G trial with BT (British Telecommunications plc). BT has already successfully completed a series of test voice calls using Nortel Networks 3G technology. Nortel Networks has also announced a 3G trial with the North American GSM Alliance.
The state-of-the-art terminals being used in these tests are pocketable devices that have been developed by Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) and will be representative of the first generation of commercially available 3G devices.
Nortel Networks will also demonstrate voice and data calls using W-CDMA technology over a live network at the GSM World Congress next week in Cannes, France. |
