From our friends on the NVLS thread ...

Novellus Sees 1st-Qtr Sales Exceeding 4th-Qtr Sales:

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Novellus Systems Inc. Chief Financial
Officer Bob Smith said he expects the chip-equipment maker's
first-quarter sales to exceed fourth-quarter sales by as much as $5
million, an improvement over earlier forecasts.

A month ago, Novellus was expecting first-quarter sales to be unchanged from the fourth quarter, when it sold $106 million of chipmaking tools. Smith revised the forecast after the San Jose, California-based company got more orders in January than it expected, he said.

Novellus is the latest chip-equipment maker to cite an improved outlook for this quarter as semiconductor companies buy more and the industry recovery builds up steam. On Tuesday, No. 1 Applied Materials Inc. said orders were pouring in and told analysts it would earn double what they expected this quarter. ''There's new capacity being added,'' Smith, attending the SEMInvest '99 conference in New York, said in an interview.

Novellus is getting a ''surprising'' number of orders from Southeast
Asia, Smith said. He expects the company's second- quarter sales and
orders to be even higher than in the first quarter.
