MacSciTech Board of Directors Applauds Apple's NeXT Move

Worcester, MA (February 10, 1997). The MacSciTech Users Association today
announced its official support of Apple's move to merge NeXT's OPENSTEP
operating system with the Mac OS. The reason NeXT was chosen as Apple's
OS partner is that their OPENSTEP OS provides more leading edge
technologies than other possible partners. MacSciTech's board of
directors is quite encouraged by the upcoming merger of Mac OS and NeXT
technologies. To this end, the board has issued the following official
statement, expressing its support of Apple's most recent move.

"MacSciTech applauds Apple's decision to respond to customer needs and,
further, it commends Apple for its forward-looking managerial decisions
on behalf of the Macintosh users' needs, and its positive action in
acquiring the NeXT OS technology as well as the technical resources of
the NeXT organization.

"OPENSTEP offers all of the key functionality that Macintosh science,
engineering and design users have asked for -- multiprocesssing, full
preemptive multitasking, protected memory and more, such as stability for
the past 5 years.

"MacScitech looks to the OPENSTEP purchase as providing the foundation
for a modern OS which is just the beginning. Through the new Mac OS,
Apple can offer differentiating technology in the areas of user
interface, component software, and multimedia technologies. "While
expecting the continuation of ease of use and flexibility features like
plug-and-play, which have made the Mac OS the platform of choice for
productivity, our users are looking forward to true multitasking,
improvements in the Mac user interface, OpenDoc software, and QT and QD3D
suited to the needs of the science, engineering, and technical markets as
well as those of the multimedia market. Meeting these needs justifies
strong support in the science, engineering, and technology markets for
Mac OS products.

"In the future the science, engineering, and technology community will
require new technologies such as transparent, symmetric multiprocessor
support and OpenDoc component software. Full integration and support of
all of these technologies will be essential to the scientific community
embracing the Mac OS as its platform of choice." MacSciTech, founded in
1991, is an independent, professional association of over 2000 scientists
and engineers from aerospace, pharmaceutical, medical, university, and
manufacturing companies. MacScitech sponsors education and training
programs, including technical conferences and CD-ROM collections, to
support users of the Macintosh computing environment in science,
research, engineering, and industry. The group's monthly technical
journal, the SciTech Journal, focuses on application articles, technology
tutorials, and product reviews related to the Mac OS in science and
engineering. The MacSciTech Web site has become a hub for the technical
Macintosh community at <http://www.macscitech.org/>. The Developer
Advisory Council of MacSciTech is a group of over 30 hardware and
software developers who work with MacSciTech members to promote the
effective use of Macintosh computers in science and engineering.
