Just another thought RE: the MF article. Postponing profits and waiting out your opposition by using all the "free" money from a debt offering is insane! Sure, I understand this for a while- but not several more years! This is the internet...you can't get into a price war for a few years, and hope your competition dies...your competition (on line) doesn't have a mortgage, a huge inventory or other overhead...They won't necessarily die a quick death...but much worse, there is zero barrier to entry. Force them out of business, then in 2005 raise your prices and make a killing? Nice model except that 2 weeks after you raise prices new competitors will flood the market. And who knows what will happen in 2005? Perhaps the internet will have changed dramatically- perhaps 50% of web access will be through cable modems, all controlled by a few major cable companies...which have decided to form their own bookstore...
