I just saw some numbers in this month's smart money magazine that show that the average AOL share is held for about one month, as compared with an average hold time of 2 1/2 years for Coke. And AOL is not the worst: the average hold time for EBay is about a day. This is why AOL has so much intraday volatility, most of the market is being made by day traders who buy in the morning and sell in the afternoon or vice versa. For the sake of scalping a point or two they are giving up yearly appreciation of hundreds of percentage points. So as for me, I am holding.
