One of the more radical ideas to come along, although it would initially apply to heavily traded Nasdaq stocks, is the plan by E*Trade, Datek and other online brokers to "cross" their trades internally amongst their own customers, without using a market maker. For example, if you wanted to sell company XYZ at a certain price, and I was willing to buy it at that price, the trade would be executed amongst the brokers, instead of going to a MM. IMHO, MMs are nothing more than pimps!
