Gateway picks AMD as second supplier for chips

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., Feb 19 (Reuters) - Personal
computer maker Gateway Inc. said Friday it picked Advanced
Micro Devices as its second supplier of microprocessor
chips.
Gateway said the move will complement offerings from Intel
Corp. and will allow the company to provide its
clients the best computing values without compromising on
features or computing speed.
Gateway said Intel will represent the bulk of its
microprocessor purchases.
"Both Intel and AMD offer a broad range of high quality and
competitively priced product lines," said Jim Booth, vice
president of Global Materials and Supply Management for
Gateway.
"We made the decision to take advantage of AMD's offerings
to add flexibility to our product line and to give our clients
choices."
The company said it expects to begin shipping personal
computers powered by AMD microprocessors as early as the second
quarter 1999.
