The essence of being a gorilla I suppose is the high switching cost.
I'd like to introduce a perhaps surprising gorilla, namely Merck.
Successful drugs make the doctors and the patients very unwilling to
switch. I know of no company as likely to produce successful drugs as
MRK. Because of their huge size there will probably always be some
"blockbuster" drugs for sale from Merck. Also their research is the
best. I do research in the synthetic chemistry of pharmaceuticals and
everybody in this field knows that it's an honor to work for Merck.
That fact took decades to establish, decades of respect by management
for the individual researchers. Certainly it won't grow as fast as SAP
and Microsoft but the excellence and size of the research creates an
invulnerability which is probably superior to theirs. Okay I'm long this stock but I've been so for years and my family would kill me if
I sold a single share so wishing to stay alive I don't sell it. Furthermore I recommend it to all of you gorilla seekers. The computer is the greatest invention ever but there are a few gorillas outside of that field, a very few.
