LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: Lucent demonstrates 'live'
third generation mobile systems and applications

FEB 17, 1999, M2 Communications - Cannes, France -- Lucent
Technologies will demonstrate its prototype wideband Code Division
Multiple Access (W-CDMA) family of products for the first time as part of a
'live' third generation (3G) mobile system at the GSM World Congress. The
demonstration illustrates one aspect of Lucent's collaboration with Japanese
operator NTT DoCoMo, which is currently developing a 3G network to
support a broad range of enhanced wireless services.

"NTT DoCoMo is leading the way in the development of next-generation
wireless technology and Lucent is delighted to be part of the team. Both
companies are pleased to showcase for the first time the progress we have
made towards demonstrating the full capabilities of our wideband CDMA
base station for third generation wireless systems, " said Jim Brewington,
president of Lucent's Wireless Networks Group. " NTT DoCoMo has an
aggressive timetable for commercialising its third generation network, and
Lucent is investing a great deal of time and resources to help NTT DoCoMo
meet its deadlines."

Brewington added: "Lucent is committed to supplying W-CDMA solutions
for third-generation networks. We fully support the efforts being made in the
industry to meet the ITU's deadlines for finalising the relevant standards."

The demonstrations will show a range of 3G applications, such as high-speed
wireless Web browsing, file transfer and even videoconferencing. They will
also show the interworking between second- and third-generation systems
with calls to a GSM network made over the 3G air interface. In addition,
Lucent will incorporate software based on that developed by Lucent as part
of project RAINBOW (Radio Access Independent Broadband on Wireless),
which was sponsored by the European Commission under its Advanced
Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) programme to develop
GSM access for mobile Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks.

The NTT DoCoMo Base Transceiver Station (BTS) prototype uses a
modular design with up to twelve transceivers per single base station frame.
The Pcell, a single sector, one or two carrier minicell is also featured. The
BTS is ideal for implementation in a growing network as extra transceivers
can be added when needed. This reduces initial network investment and adds
a degree of flexibility and future-proofing to the network. In addition, both
products can be configured to support single sector, single carrier and
multi-sector, multi-carrier operations.

Lucent is a leading global supplier of CDMA solutions and is the only system
vendor to have announced projects with customers around the world to
develop 3G systems based on a family of CDMA standards. These include
the NTT DoCoMo (W-CDMA) and DDI/IDO (cdma2000) trials in Japan;
Vodafone (UMTS) in the UK; and Sprint/Bell Atlantic (cdma2000) in the
US. Lucent is also working within the Universal Wireless Communications
Consortium (UWC) to provide a 3G evolution path for Lucent's 2G
networks based on the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) standard.

Lucent has a range of 3G integrated mobile network solutions that encompass
every aspect of future networks, including infrastructure solutions for voice
and data; transmission and switching equipment; and a range of software
products. Supported by its research and development division, Bell Labs,
and through third-party agreements with terminal, application and content
providers, Lucent can provide total end-to-end 3G solutions. Lucent also
supplies mobile and fixed wireless communications systems that offer global
service providers standards-based solutions for serving the information needs
of consumers and enterprises.

Lucent is a major player in many of the standards and industry organisations
throughout the world, including the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU), the European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) and the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It also actively participates in
the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Forum, the
CDMA Development Group (CDG), the GSM MoU Association and the
UWC.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and
delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications
systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems
and microelectronic components. Bell Labs is the research and development
arm for the company. For more information on Lucent Technologies, visit our
