We've done ok with the tax structure as it is, the oil gluts have periodically given the fiscal stimulus that big tax breaks would provide. Thirdly the "virtuous cycle" of holding the line on budget, getting lower rates and resultant lower govt debt payments all play into the economic momentum. More fiscal stimulus is simply eye candy. Especially as how the fruits of the economy are funneled to the higher income end, why insist on a reversal of the policy. A tax cut based on a blanket increase in standard deduction may be a good way to implement a cut. Remember where the bulk of the debt arises;
corporate welfare instituted by the reagan congress (very shady capital depreciation allowances) and middle-class welfare for the military-industrial complex. We have so many artifices in the economy its hard to say what's right.
As to whether the change of power induced economic turn or not, I speak from my personal observations of a subjective nature. Of course the economy is always cycling between highs and lows, you might prefer to trace it back to Paul Volcker and 12% mortgage rates, the reagan recession and relentless fed followed by the defense build-down begining with Bush and continued with Clinton (to much pain for the politically helpful state of Ca, btw). The budget deal was a final blow to strengthen the dollar and bring down the interest rates.
