" the debt mountain has to be brought under control."
Two stories of econmics, one macro (for me) and one micro.
I recently sent off for one of these free credit reports, having never seen what was out there on me. What I found was that I am listed as having several credit lines that I did not ask for and did not know about, and others that I have not used for years, and that with almost no effort on my part I seem to have $57,000 in unused credit. This is, I emphasize, mostly without even asking for it. Imagine what would be possible if you asked--or even just accepted everything that came in the mail.
When I first opened a savings account I had to give 30 days' notice if I wanted to take my OWN money out.
The micro story shows how one can operate on a literally hand-to-mouth level. Usually I get a pork tenderloin biscuit and coffee for breakfast at a local farmer's market where I shop, but today things were so slow that no one was selling breakfast and I had to go to MacDonald's for my weekly cholesterol. Over the counter was a sign offering an Egg McMuffin breakfast for $2.15 with medium cofee so I asked for an Egg McMuffin and a medium coffee. The register rang up $2.48. I pointed at the sign. "Oh, you get hash browns with that!" So I asked for hash browns, she rang it back up, and total was $2.28. So I will just have a lighter lunch. |
