SHOCK AT POPE PLEA

HUMAN rights groups were "shocked" yesterday at the
Pope's plea for tyrant General Pinochet.

The Vatican admitted sending a message to the Foreign
Office.

It is thought they called for extradition proceedings
against the 83-year-old Chilean ex-dictator to be
dropped on humanitarian grounds.

But Carlos Reyes, head of London based Chile
Democratico, said: "We are shocked that the Pope is
supporting Pinochet.

"He himself has said that blood has stained the hands
of those responsible for genocide and they have to be
arrested."
