Re: Your questions

1. How big of a threat is LINUX to MSFT? Is it only to NT5.0?
7 Years away at very very best. 3 years to get software developers to decide to try and write an entire world supply of thounsads of solutions for the marketplace, and 3 years to write them, and 1 year of people deciding to dump their own code for it. If developers write to Java or "Cool", and it will run in a browser, then the OS doesn't matter for the client, only the server. At this point AS/400, Linux, Unix, Novell offer better scaling than NT...and since they are not winning now, MSFT has little to fear mid term. (certainly the next 3 years, nothing to fear). The real issue is the MSFT does NOT target itself as the Mainframe OS competitor. The go small/mid size departmentalized server. And guess what? One Mainframe in a company equals 1000 mid-size servers with NT, with 10000 PC's all running Win2000, Office 2000, etc etc etc etc.

2. What are the pros and cons of LINUX?
Linux is bulletproof. We use one as a server and in 1.5 years never ever had a minor problem. nada one. Our NT servers crash all the time.

CON - Interface, No Support, No Applications, No Support, No Skilled Managers, No Support. This business is today built around people who take responsibility for the code...and Linix has none yet. They WILL get it though...but too many years out to be a threat. MSFT could rewrite their entire OS around Linux kernal, and then THEY would win again. (don't think their isn't a skunkworks at this right now either).

3. Is LINUX targeted at consumers or just enterprise?
Linix is targeted towards neither as of yet, but will be targeted towards the server market. (web/deptmntl server that is). As a desktop, it will not fly for 7 years...as the apps are crap, and mom and pop can't get support, and even if they could get support, it would take 7 years to get kids hooked TODAY, have them get through school, and know enough to support people over the phone. What the PRESS is talking about here is a complete shift of OS/Applications/Users and Support, from Software Companies that make their LIVING with NT/WIN98 today. Give me a fricken break. Software companies may not like MSFT, but they make their money because of the standardization it has brought the industry. That is why they hate them. Linux will get support, but so did Taligent, Pink, and other OS's.

4. Is LINUX user friendly?

Ha

5. With your answers...how certain are you?

100%...and my portfolio shows it. 100% MSFT.
