Because of society-imposed limitations on women, the majority of great thinkers and artists of the past have been male. And while women have broken free to a great extent from these creative chains, the residuals of that thinking are still very evident. Artistic achievement in women is still regarded with an element of surprise, as if she were in some way abnormal. And maybe she is, in our society. Of course, as you say, genius is often perverse, probably because it is genius. Still, it is rare to find men acting as muse and martyr to a female talent. If patterns can be found in the past it isn't because genius is restricted to category (as you said so well) but because man has limited its outlet to certain more "acceptable" categories.
