Don;t you think there are many relationships that have this element of sacrifice and nurturance but don't necessarily include an artist as a partner? That's what I meant by the societal limitations in the past. I think Karma is right that women are no longer willing to subserve (is that a word?) but I don't think it's only about artists,; it's about the role of men and women. Women have traditionally performed this role for men, but we don't notice those who produce nothing or live mundane lives. Didn't Linda live this type of sacrificial life in Death of a Salesman?
ON the other hand--creative drive is a strange master. I remember a composition assignment over Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Day I had an idea, sat down at the piano early in the morning , and didn't emerge until late afternoon. Dan had cooked the entire dinner, taken care of the two babies, (and proceeded to tell me how glad he was to do it all). I had absolutely no recall of all those hours; I had gone into some weird zone. I suppose from the outside it would have looked very selfish. ANd I know my dearest friends think I am terrible the nights I give the boys pizza money because I'm in the middle of a chapter and don't want to stop.
