My hardrive is divided in to 2 parts C is NTFS and D is FAT it is only a 8.4 hardrive I do have PM ....any suggestions would be appreciated as the best way to divide the drive.

Does it make a difference where I install programs at all ?

Why do you want to partition the drive? IMO one should only partition a drive if one has a specific need.

Possible reasons for partitioning a drive.

1. DOS can only see 2 gig. So If you have an 8 gig drive and DOS you would need to divide into 2 gig partitions.

2. You are running NT and Win95 on the same drive. You may want a 2 gig or less FAT partition such that NT and Win95 can coexist in the first partition.

3. You have a one drive system and want to use Drive Image to back up your OS/system. You would need a second partition as Drive Image will not back up a partition to the same partition.

4. You want to minimize the size of the primary partition so that backups are kept to a minimum size. The second partition could contain data files or other that would be handled as a separate backup option.

I believe it is risky keeping apps on a second partition. If the apps are kept on a second partition you will run into changing drive letter issues if you add a second drive.
