Bruce, Apparently your friend is liviing in the past, and doesn't understand the new breed of online investor, or the new horizon taking shape in the internet driven opportunities in both online commerce and online investing...The big financial houses are very upset and concerned over this new breed of investor, because they cannot control them like they used to control the old type of investor, who was ripped off in numerous ways, through the houses' brokers...Thank God for the internet...The playing field is a little more level, although it still appears that the SEC plays favorites on behalf of the money houses and the Market Makers...But there is no doubt that today's investor/trader is more informed and sophisticated than the old school of investor...That's why you see so many ex-brokers finding a livelihood elsewhere...
