Dave, Thread, I, for one, have no objection to the free trade discussion underway here and am following, like La Traguhs, as closely as possible. My reasoning is simple. I believe the disk drive industry is unique, (so far) in its "globalization" and further believe that, until recently, it was largely controlled by American companies. There is little doubt in my mind that there is new found competitive strength coming from Japan and Korea, and I note (with a little alarm) that this competition seems unphased by the recessions in their respective home countries. Thus a free trade discussion, while a macro subject, is on topic after all.
In your last post you inferred that you had some ideas about re-training and I would be curious to know these. I think that rapid technology advances have contributed to an accelerated need. The issue I wrestle with is whether private or public initiatives (or both) are called for. I am also interested in the role of immigration policy. Would welcome your thoughts.
