Good points all but.... you say bottled air and I say bottled water.
The really important issue here in my opinion is that the cutting edge developers are accepting Linux with open arms. I'm not a programmer so I don't really know why but, I think it is simply because it is free and the support network is the on-line programmers themselves instead of a skunk works in Redmond Wa. Is it a threat to Microsoft? I doubt it is yet mostly, because of the reasons you state. But, I'd wager that the GUI will be developed (on-line and free) in the near future and it will eventually be a major OS threat. JMHO. Don't know how we could capitalize on it though.
