You're Bill Clinton ... ... and you get away with everything
You're Bill Clinton. You're President of the United States. You were impeached and acquitted. Today you're visiting New Hampshire. You're probably feeling pretty good today because you got away with it. All of it. You dishonored your office, betrayed your oath, dragged the nation through a tawdry year-long sex scandal when you could have stopped it before it began simply by telling the truth.
You lied your way out of the Monica Lewinsky scrape just as you lied your way out of military service back in the 1960s. You've lied about so many things, to so many people, for so long that you no longer are capable of telling the truth without hedging or weaseling. You lie so habitually, so pathologically, that for you even common everyday words have lost their meaning. Doubtless you're still chuckling about your quibbling over the definition of "is."
This is where your future lying as President got started, right here in New Hampshire, where we first learned that your notion of "truth" was infinitely flexible. This is where as a candidate you lied about Gennifer Flowers and dodging the draft. You lied about Monica, too. You looked us in the eye and lied. Then you lied under oath before God. You induced others to lie on your behalf. You still would be lying today were it not for that stained dress.
Now your former law student, federal Judge Susan Webber Wright, says that she might cite you for contempt of court, but you're not worried. You're Bill Clinton and you've been flaunting your contempt for the law, morality and the institutions of justice, and getting away with it, for all of your adult life.
Yes, you're Bill Clinton and you've always gotten away with it. You got away with selling out our nation's security to Red China. You personally approved the transfer of critical technology to Beijing that enabled the Communists to MIRV and increase the accuracy of their nuclear missiles. Over the objections of the Pentagon, you personally okayed the sale of supercomputers, weapons-related and advanced machine technologies to Red China. The products of those technology transfers now are aimed at America and at our freedom-loving friends in Taiwan.
Someday the missiles based on American technology, our technology, that you allowed to be sold to Red China might come back to us and take the lives of our soldiers, sailors and airman. But why should you care? You're Bill Clinton and you will be long gone from the White House by the time the bill comes due for your squalid betrayal of the nation's security.
You had to do this, of course, because you're Bill Clinton and you had to win reelection no matter the cost. You sold the Communist Chinese what they wanted and needed, and they channeled money to your campaign through the People's Liberation Army, Beijing's intelligence services and a score of shady middlemen, corrupting our constitutional system in defense of which hundreds of thousands of Americans gave their lives.
But you're Bill Clinton and you got away with this, too, because there is nothing you can do that will cause your party to abandon you. You turned the Oval Office into a brothel and rented out the Lincoln Bedroom and your fellow Democrats looked away or became your accomplices. Corrupted by your lust for power, your Democrats obstructed the Senate investigation into your China connection, just as they impeded your impeachment trial in the Senate. Your Justice Department has stonewalled the investigation into the Chinagate campaign contributions scandal over the objections of your own FBI director.
You're Bill Clinton and you told us the "era of big government is over," then you gave us one big government program after another, promising a free lunch and cynically offering something for everybody. Way back in 1992 you promised us a middle class tax cut, but now you say that not one penny of the $2 trillion budget surplus can go to tax relief.
You condemn the "politics of personal destruction" even as your smarmy character assassins smear your critics. You're Bill Clinton, President of the United States, and you're not the least embarrassed being defended by pornographer Larry Flynt. You're shameless. After all, you're Bill Clinton.
