Rape claim returns for Clinton

FROM DAMIAN WHITWORTH IN WASHINGTON

A WOMAN who claims she was raped by Bill Clinton broke her silence yesterday to talk about the alleged incident in graphic detail.
Juanita Broaddrick told The Wall Street Journal that Mr Clinton assaulted her in 1978, when he was attorney-general in Arkansas and running for the governorship. Mrs Broaddrick, then 35, owned a nursing home and had worked for the campaign.

She said he told her she would not get pregnant because he was sterile after a bout of childhood mumps and before leaving told her to put some ice on her lips to reduce the swelling caused by his biting.

The story first emerged around the time of Mr Clinton's first presidential campaign but Mrs Broaddrick denied it in an affidavit she provided for the Paula Jones sexual harassment case. When she was approached by investigators working for Kenneth Starr, the independent prosecutor, she said the affidavit had been false.

Last month she gave an interview to NBC television news but the network has not screened it.

However, yesterday an interview with her appeared in the relentlessly anti-Clinton paper. Dorothy Rabinowitz, who interviewed Mrs Broaddrick, said she was a woman "seeking no profit, no book, no lawsuit."

The paper reported that Mrs Broaddrick met Mr Clinton when he visted her nursing home. They met for coffee and Mr Clinton suggested they go to her hotel room.
