What makes me grit my teeth are the "interim solutions" that are not solutions at all; they are stopgaps used to avoid thinking.

Mind you, I'm basically libertarian and I am affronted by the sloppy thinking, by the waste, by the sheer nonsense.

We have curbside recycling too and compliance has been reasonable. What was unreasonable was the early enforcement (I think I've mentioned this in the past) by armed sanitation police! Armed?

Now we are supposed to segregate, separately, metal, glass, plastic, newspapers and magazines, corrugated cartons, and other paper. Consider what this starts to mean to people living in walk up apartments with no central collection areas. I suspect compliance has fallen because it has grown overwhelming. Moreover, a good deal of the carefully separated waste items do not have a destination yet; for these items, curbside recycling is cosmetic and PC; the actual recycling does not yet take place.

I think I'll go offline to shudder for a while.
