Edwarda: Although you are correct in your comment about the Company's focus being the "edge," I'll have to agree w/ chiro's concerns about their ability to execute such focus (yes, you do have to execute on the focus to be focused). Too broad.
Palm is getting to the point where it could and probably should be an entity in and of itself. Lots of opps. to consider and follow, especially given the future of wireless smart appliances; IMHO, quite a few of them are not even being addressed by the co. (at least not in the media reports that I read). Some examples:
1. expand and focus the use of the device for data collection at point of use (Oracle dBase integration, etc. required). Use it to collect and transmit data (via wire) to home base, rather than just the downstream communication that everyone is talking about. Now you'd have a real bznz appliance.
2. Expand MAC development efforts to have the thing seamlessly integrated to the next Mac OS. Yeah, there's already been talk about it, but nothing of substance has appeared that I know about. Imagine: a desktop PC w/ its portable / semi-wirelss extension appliance. Dock it to port when you're at the office. No more need for laptops, yada yada yada..... A good way way to counter CE, IMAO.
The list of opps for Palm is nearly endless. I suspect that, if it were spun off, valuations would likely soar when the wireless hype reaches its inevitable crescendo in the coming months / years. Hard to accomplish this when it is being directed by the same Board that worries about CSCO and networking gear..
The same stuff could be said for other parts of COMS bznz, modems / cable modems, newtworking gear, etc. for example.
Back to my cave... Still long....
