Have you ever actually read "Heather Has Two Mommies"? It is totally innocuous, written for very small children. There is absolutely no sex in it at all. The idea behind it is that not all children grow up in exactly the same kinds of families, period. The point behind teaching children this is so that there is a lesser incidence of hate crimes against homosexuals, including homosexual children. If you say that everyone has the same rights under our laws, and don't condone any attacks on homosexuals, but are aware that there is a huge number of these hate crimes in our society, wouldn't you want to take reasonable steps to educate the homophobic general public that everyone has these same rights? Obviously, children learn hatred and fear from their parents. So the only realistic way of turning this situation around is to teach tolerance in school. Certainly, it is not being taught in most homes or churches! You seem to be stuck on the idea that teaching tolerance is the same thing as encouraging your child to be homosexual, like it is a behavior that can be taught. As long as you believe this--and many Americans do--this debate will continue. But it is not true!
