I hate to admit it, but I too have a problem with assigning Heather Has Two Mommies in school. Not because I have a problem with people who have persons of their own sex for lovers but because it does smack of indoctrination. Having read it, I do find it promotional.

Mind you, having attended a religious school myself, I object to a heavily religious tilt in reading matter outside religion classes.

I think that if children ask in school, the answers that they are given should be tolerant, perhaps even should err (in your view) on the side of tolerance. And I think that it is appropriate in sex education classes to make children aware of pairings that are not the "standard" heterosexual married couple with two children and a wife at home. It is even appropriate in my opinion to portray such pairings as "all right" and not necessarily "sick."

As we all know, children may not learn even a semblance of tolerance at home. A child's home can be extremely bigoted, to the point of finding "gay bashing" acceptable. A child's home can produce people such as the men who dragged a black man behind their car to his death to gain attention for their white supremacist group. There should be some attempt to offer balance to a home that promulgates this kind of savage bigotry against anyone simply for being "different."

I think it is important to clarify in what specific venue various messages are being conveyed and what those messages are before continuing to argue. This is not a simple issue at all.
