Like a lot of people who use the internet, I want it to stay cheap and still grow in capability. The local phone companies still have the closest thing to a monopoly because their is only one "copper" connection to most homes and businesses. I also have a difficult time in feeling sorry for the REBOCs who for years were able to soak up the gravy train without any real motivation to change their infrastructure to be able to provide for technological advances. They had the ability to migrate the systems and take a leadership role long before now.

I think that free enterprise should be allowed to control pricing but I also think that the abusive use of the position the phone companies had held for so many years is tantamount to criminal neglect. We should "tar 'n feather them rascals and ride 'em out of town on a rail!". Confescate the local trunk and turn it over to the people then let competition among the multitude of LD providers bare the rest.
Pardon, I just had a flash-back to my college days in the 70s.
