Before I begin, just want to let the thread know I am long MS and hopefully will be working for them this August when I get back from Spain. (Then I can buy MS stock at 85% market price!)

Anyway, I believe people are overlooking the fact that Linux hardware support is poor. As someone working with NT I can tell you that MSFT has come a long way in terms of NT support for all types of hardware. Once Windows 2000 is released with true plug and play I expect that cycle will be complete. Designing an OS that works with virtually any combination in my opinion is the most difficult task MSFT faces with each new OS. Not only do they have to support legacy systems, they are forced to constantly release drivers for new cutting edge hardware. The hackers delight Linux works OK with standard hardware, but getting support for the latest and greatest graphics card is next to impossible. This is an issue for MANY users and believe me they are not going to have the patience to sit on a tech support line for 5 hours with their new Linux OS trying to get their graphics card to support more than 16 colors.

I agree that Linux is a nice, stable OS when it is installed correctly. Technical people (particularly CS graduates that spent thousands of hours learning C++ on a Unix box) actually get kicks out of trying to get Linux to work right. When it is tweaked properly it works great, otherwise it is hellish.

One could argue that I have a vested interest in this and I would agree. However, I know for a fact that Linux is more complex to support than NT and it is no coincidence that Linux advocates also happen to be Linux system admins who will see their salary levels INCREASE the more Linux is used. At least, I assume this will happen as I have seen this occur as an NT admin / developer as NT continues to steamroll over Novell and other second tier players.

Good luck to all!
