I haven't really been following the CPU market, but my understanding is that the PIII is just a PII with some new MMX instructions and perhaps a faster clock.

Same core as the PII with the 70 new KNI(Katmai New Instructions) instructions added. Unlike MMX, the KNI instructions do improve performance by a good degree if the applications are optimized for KNI. Intel has provided much better developer support this time around.

If you are heavily into games, voice recognition software, etc., KNI is great. The price premium for the PIII is a bit much, but it should only take a year or so before they add KNI to the Celeron.

VTune is one of the coolest programs I've ever seen.
