Has the compression rate reduced?

"EPAC ... Music is compressed at a rate of 11 to 1, thus reducing the transmission time/bandwidth and storage by the same ratio, while still retaining its fidelity."

I seem to recall seeing in the Renwick report that Lucent was capable of 22:1 and 14:1 compression ratios for near CD and CD quality sound. Why is the compression rate only 11:1 now?

Now, why would the compression rates for the Internet be 11:1 but 22:1 or 14:1 for an e.Digital prototype portable Internet music player?

I recall us talking about how Lucent's compression capabilities were superior to those other portable digital music players that reported compression rates of 12:1 and 18:1.

Now where do we stand?
