HDL, this part of your post has me confused:

Its huge profit margins have attracted serious competition which has had time to get its act together.

What competitors might those be? Compaq has had anything but sterling earnings, HWP doesn't grow, IBM reported poor top line-growth. I read that Hitachi was exiting all but the server business, Tulip (Holland) is gone. White box manufacturers market share is contracting. Only GTW is looking good, and it's primarily consumer oriented. What have I missed?
