RE: Mavica

zdnet.com
The Sony Mavica cameras offer what is probably the ultimate convenience:They save files directly to floppy disks. But there's a tradeoff: To avoid having to change disks every couple of shots, Sony applies more compression to its images than most other cameras, which degrades image quality. Still, the floppy disk convenience and other features make the Sony MVC-FD81 ($800 street) our Editors' Choice for business users.

I could post review after review that says the same thing. People like the convenience and familiarity of 1.44 floppies in the Mavica. This is why they are so popular. And this is why Flop! has a tough road to haul. Ther are NO Flop! drives out there in computers. None. People have never heard of the Flop! drive. It is an entirely unfamiliar format incompatible with regular floppy drives, Zip drives, or Superdisk drives. The ability to take a floppy disk right out of the Mavica and put it into any PC's floppy drive is the main selling point.

**On a side note, the reason the Mavica's battery life is relatively long (at least on the spec sheet) is because it uses lithium-ion batteries (the same kind of batteries as in Camcorders). They are expensive but rechargable. Since the floppy is a mechanical device, it takes more power to use (just like Flop!). You must keep this limitation in mind-- You just can't hop off to a remote location and expect to be able to buy batteries for the Mavica at the gas station. You must bring the recharger, or buy and tag along more backup batteries.
