>>Zip uses a low-friction spacer pad, which prevents the head from contacting the spinning media. <<

Is this the same "Miracle" spacing pad that allows Zip it's fantastic (NOT) Vibration and shock specs? Besides, the only pad I've ever seen clear evidence of in a Zip drive is the "cleaning" pad on which the heads rest when parked. This arrangement is seen on a photo at grc.com If you know of any firm evidence of any other head pads in a Zip drive, please let me know.

>>Do you have some evidence that Clik! doesn't use the same design?<<

If you mean "spacing pads" that ride over the disk, then I would have to say Yes, I do have evidence that this does not exist. I saw the OEM Flop! drive first-hand at PC Expo 98 in its clear casing. There were no pads-- Just the delicate read/write heads floating over a naked disk. One could see the head arm swing back and forth over the disk. Of course, pads could have since been designed in, but this all goes back to the lack of any hard evidence (to my knowledge) of this piece of engineering existing at all, even in the Zip drive.

And of course, it all goes back to spacing pads or not, the Zip drive has terrible shock and vibration specs. Flop! would not seem to benefit greatly from this feature either, especially since the tolerances are even smaller.
