Hmmmm - an excellent idea!

I think the majors are quite vulnerable (for instance mp3.com is pioneering non-exclusive contracts - they are completely shattering the old business models) and deserve a sound shorting. Unfortunately, I don't know of "pure plays" in this area.

I mentioned in the bottom of my introduction that Time Warner has a convoluted situation in that their intellectual property (Warner Music) and Road Runner online/ Warner Cable (&CNN...) are under one umbrella (NYSE TWX I believe). The Sony situation is similar except they have no major online undertakings that I'm aware of.

I actually think that small labels could benefit so even if they existed as pure plays I think shorting them would be risky. Perhaps any music retailers that are public deserve to be shorted. However, they may already have been beaten down artificially low by the Amazon et al juggernaut(like Borders in todays wsj.com).

Anyway, let me know if you uncover anything interesting. I recommend you read all the links you have time to but especially
mp3.com
because it parallels (and more succinctly defines) my musings in the final introductory paragraph. Perhaps even the majors will achieve pie in the sky internet valuations by giving away their property, obsolescing illegal mp3 sites, and selling advertising space! (they could spin off that pesky profitable brick and mortar distribution business if necessary...)

happy shorting!
