Some more ONTV DD:

From Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, May 1996:

<<Popeil still markets some of the old favorites: He recently sold 9,000 Pocket Fisherman rods at $30 apiece on QVC. But because of the cost of television, he's moving away from smaller gizmos. "You can't put a $10 item on an infomercial or you'll lose your shirt," he says. "I'm more into the quality appliance rather than the unique kitchen products I grew up with." His current project is a kitchen appliance that will sell for about $200, but you'll have to wait for the TV ads for more details>>

Obviously what is going on with this ONTV deal is that the advent of the cable age and it's hundreds of channels has diluted the effects of Ron's infomercials. It's costing him too much money to advertise on TV. So the internet is the perfect answer for him. If you think about it Popeil would be a bad business man to rely on his old model of generating sales when the technological infrastructure and the way we get our entertainment is changing before our very eyes. What we are seeing here is a savy business man reacting to changes in the market place. He can't afford to put a hundred infomercials on a hundred channels. He's just about given up Marketing the pocketfisherman on TV because of the prohibitive costs. So instead he is going internet. Knowing how big RONCO is, I wouldn't be surprised to them getting tie-ins with some of the major internet hitters out there. Stay tuned for more.
