John, I think understanding the clearing process in depth is the key. It would sure be nice if we could learn more about this, particularly since it would be an extremely appropriate topic for this thread. In my (limited!) experience, the margin requirements for shorting are no different in the cases where there has been no stock borrowed. - Daniel
