U.S. stock index futures drift upward early

CHICAGO, Feb 22 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures drifted upward to small gains in fairly light early pit trading on Monday.

The blue-chip issues appeared to pace the quiet advance, with the cash Nasdaq 100 index lagging on the minus side as the Dow
30 Industrials posted a 37-point rise.

Merger activity in the oil sector and consolidation in the aerospace industry headlined most-watched issues on Monday.

But floor brokers said they saw little other solid news to account for the advance on the heels of Friday's gains.

''Usually, Mondays are up days,'' said one floor broker of the market's tendency after the weekend to float upward. ''If there's no good reason, then it naturally is
going to go up.''

He said a couple of firms bought a total of about 800 March Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 futures early, with other ''casual buying'' from locals keeping the
market firm.

''I think people are opening up long positions for the week,'' he added.

But some trepidation persisted about Tuesday's and Wednesday's semi-annual Humphrey-Hawkins testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.
