ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 1999--David Wetherell,
Chairman and CEO of CMGI (NASDAQ:CMGI), today announced the
appointment of William J. Hawkins to the newly created position of
President, Internet Technology. CMGI is a majority shareholder or
owner/operator of more than 30 Internet companies spanning online
community, commerce, content, and infrastructure disciplines.
In this new role, Mr. Hawkins will provide strategic counsel and
technical vision to the company's Internet Group, as well as its
Ventures investments. The Internet Group includes Planet Direct,
NaviSite, NaviNet, Engage Technologies, ADSmart, Magnitude Network,
and ZineZone, while Ventures has been instrumental in the funding and
development of Internet firms such as Lycos (NASDAQ:LCOS), GeoCities
(NASDAQ:GCTY), Reel.com, PlanetAll, Vicinity, Silknet, Chemdex,
ThingWorld.com, Raging Bull, and more than 20 others.
Mr. Hawkins, a 20-year veteran of the software industry, comes to CMGI after a 4-year tenure with America Online (AOL), serving most
recently as Vice President of Advanced Technology. While at America
Online, Mr. Hawkins was instrumental in the design and development of
integrated browser and messaging technology, as well as other key
aspects of AOL's Internet platform strategy.
Prior to joining America Online, Mr. Hawkins was the Chief
Technical Officer of BookLink Technologies, where he pioneered the
design and development of componentized Internet browser technology.
CMGI sold BookLink Technologies to America Online in 1994.
Prior to BookLink, Mr. Hawkins served for 7 years at Interleaf,
where as a System Architect, he pioneered the design and development
of electronic publishing and DOS-extender technologies. Before joining Interleaf, Mr. Hawkins worked as a technical contributor at a variety of Boston-area software companies. Mr. Hawkins received a BA from Swarthmore College in 1975, and did graduate work in Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT.
