Thank you all for your ideas.

I am not invested in Japan and it is not my concern per se. My concern is the idea that any long-term buy and hold investor in the US stock market will be rewarded eventually.

Japanese stockmarket is down 80% from its highs and continue to go down for more than 10 years. It is not 20%-30% down bear market for 3-5 years. It's something else.

Of course each country is different. However, Japanese stockmarket, and their economy are the 2nd largest in the world. It is not a marginal or small stockmarket.

Why should we assume it can not happen in the US?

One bright thought after all this gloom:
Stock of the Gorilla type companies in Japan are doing quite well even in this type of market!!! What about the Kings?
