Thank you all for your ideas.

I am not invested in Japan, though I consider it. My concern is the idea that any long-term buy and hold investor in the US stock market will be rewarded eventually.

Japanese stockmarket is down 80% from its highs and continue to go down for more than 10 years.
We are not talking 20%-30% bear market for 3-5 years.

Of course each country is different. However, Japanese stockmarket, and their economy are the 2nd largest in the world.
Why should we assume it can not happen in the US?
